When Gravitation keeps sneaking up on you

GEF

Sometimes it just takes nerves. When the years go by and you cross the „silver line“ and dare to become a little lazy, this good old body seems to get what technicians call „storage damage“.

I think oldies like us all more or less share this experience.

Can you relate to this?

Gravitation seems to sneak in, by and by, making it a little bit harder to move your behind …
But – do you really want to give in to gravitation?

gravitation01
Joyful laziness - very tempting

What price are you willing to pay?

As long as you are young you may think that retirement is going to be the most comfortable time of your life. You picture yourself completely relaxed and floating along, because you are no longer busy in the job and kids have grown up and can take care of themselves.

How often have I heard a friend say: „Once retired, I will be able to …“

The famous when-then logic. This critical tendency to postpone the beautiful things on your bucket list, until society „allows“ you to break free.

Well, we seem to be very good at ignoring that age comes with a price tag.

And then it takes us by surprise that our aging body slowly but surely starts refusing demands that it used to accept years ago without the slightest complaint!

Moving, moving, moving ...

Nothing to whine about, though. The news and other media are full of advice what to do to live a healthy life. Research and studies all over the place.

Means, we can do something about it.

So, last year, when I felt my condition became a little weak, I decided to give it a go.
But no – I didn’t want to end up in the gym.

If you’re like me and don’t like to be surrounded by sweating, panting youngsters struggling with all sorts of torture racks in hot pursuit of the newest muscle building fad, you choose a different approach.

The overwhelming offer of a Fitness Center - OMG! More serene: The Qi Gong approach.
gravitation03

Coming from a tradition of meditation, Tai Ji Chuan and Qi Gong, I knew how to integrate physical flexibility and balance with mental relaxation and equinamity.

But I also needed to do something to enhance physical strength and endurance, now that I don’t ride horses or hike excessively any longer.

So, I read a couple of books and watched videos by some of our popular fitness gurus. Not the ones that tell you how to train for the New York Marathon at any age. Or prepare for the „Iron Grandma“.

No intention to become a fitness freak

Neither did I want to compete with people who spend their retirement hiking up the Alps barefoot. Which a 65 year old man man from a neighbouring town actually did twice a week, just to have a beer on the mountain top.

I was looking for exercises with common sense.

Beating gravitation and helping my body keep its sound condition. And bringing my energy up.

Fun must be part of it

So, I created my own program for just 50 to 60 minutes a day.

Seemed modest, but – lo and behold – it actually did the job. And fit my lifestyle and schedule perfectly.

To make it easier and more motivating I created fun stuff around it.

For example, a brisk walk in a beautiful landscape always makes my heart sing. Actually, I have a hard time going back home after an hour. Whenever my schedule allows it I just keep on walking. It’s pure fun for me.

gravitation04
Nature - great to be there in any season.

Sometimes the weather just doesn’t play along. This is when I hop on my trampoline.

Boring and repetitive? Not if you turn on your stereo full throttle.

Jimi Hendrix, Stones, Led Zeppelin – they make me feel like I’m partying in a rock concert.

Okay, I’m considerate enough not to get on my neighbours’ nerves. I wear headphones ;-).

gravitation05
Keep on rocking, at least for 30 minutes.

Also, I need to use my proven remedy against “chicken wings”. Small, handy barbells, 1 to 2 kilos each, do a good job. Especially, when I use them while watching some motivating video clips from the Rocky series. Gonna fly now …

Finally, I want to caress my ego and take a look at my pedometer. It’s a 6.000 step minimum per day for a person of age 65 and older, the experts say.

Ha! I’m ambitious! Whenever I crack the famous 10.000 step mark, I feel sooooo good and proud of myself.

gravitation06
"Gonna fly now" with barbells. And my pedometer gives me my daily mileage.
gravitation08

Finally, I’m in for a treat. Something nice and light to eat, tasteful, high in nutritional value, low in calories.

Eat 30 different plants per week to boost your immune system, a researcher and professor in the UK wrote in his book. For me, an easy advice to follow, since I have always been a great fan of veggies and fruit.

gravitation07
Yummy - lots of colors and great tastes.

After half a year of modest daily training my physical condition and energy have improved considerably.
The secret to it, I found out, is not the intensity of the workout. It’s regularity.
I can recommend it – especially, because it really fires you up once it becomes a habit ;-).

What do you do to keep yourself alive and kicking? Any New Year’s resolutions that you have managed to integrate into your life?
I’d be very curious to know.

That’s it for now. More to come.

Freezing Rain

EW

There was freezing rain in the forecast. Unfortunately, I had an appointment with my dentist. Now, one wound happily postpone a dental appointment. Right?

But I got a really good dentist. Those are hard to come by. One of their major drawbacks: they have long waiting lists. Postponing the appointment would mean another five to six months waiting for another one. Impossible, since we have plans to spend a major part of the summer … well, we’ll talk about that later.

It barely snows in winter here in the lowlands

Coming from the Alps I brought snow showers with me. At least that’s what folks here claimed.

Everything carries a white cap

People in this region are not good at driving in snow and slush.

I’m checking the forcast again. More snow is supposed to come – and that freezing rain.
I might get to the dentist with just a load of snow falling. I don’t mind snow. The temperature is well below freezing that makes it more like driving on sand.

I remember too well that one trip from New York to my home in Maryland in winter.
It started out okay. The first snow flakes were falling in New Jersey. In Pennsylvania it developed into a blizzard. I shared the Highway only with the snowploughs treating the road. Everyone with a brain stayed home. Well, it was a tedious ride.

On the route south into Maryland, snow turned to freezing rain. The windshield started to freeze over. On the defrost setting with the heat at full power the car turned into a sauna, but it kept two spots on the windshield ice free. Unfortunately, I had to stoop down to look through one of these holes in the ice. What a pain!
Eventually, I made it to the parking lot in front of my house. I found myself trapped the car, which was enclosed in a shell of ice. I had to throw my full weight at the door to get it open.

A winter storm is brewing

Could it be that bad this time? According to the news, Frankfurt Airport just shut down. That is 30 miles to the west. The storm is approaching from that direction. I have to go east. 15 miles. Still time until it hits here.

I decided to go early. Lucky me. Some patients cancelled their appointments due to wheather. So, I moved up on the waiting list. That bought me time enough to get home before things got nasty.

Well, this was my little adventure for this week. Was it foolish or did I act within the range of “calculable risk”?

Let me know.

That’s it for now. More to come.

Mail Nostalgia

GEF

This morning, I went to the post office to check my P.O. box. It was a lovely winter morning, freezing cold, crispy clear. The first rays of the sun touched the mountain peaks.

January delight – I felt like singing and swinging.

Soundtrack of my Youth

mailnostalgia01
Early morning: The sun's first kiss.

A song came to my mind: Please Mr Postman.

And I remembered John Lennon’s voice, energetic and exuberant, while longing for a card or a letter in the postman’s bag.

Please … wait a minute, wait a minute … o yeah …

Back then, the guys from Liverpool had been around for some time. But this was the first Beatles song that I listened to with full awareness. It was so contagious that it made me jump right into what the rather conservative and grumpy German radio people of those days called the “stupid noise of long-haired imbeciles“.

How I loved the great bands of the Sixties and their music – the soundtrack of my teenage years.

mailnostalgia02
The "noisy" guys - I celebrated them.

Mail today - far from romantic

What an unromantic contrast at the post office of modern days.

No more Beatle poetry. No more longing for letters from people you missed.

My P.O.box? Boring.

Only an invoice, new terms and conditions of an insurance, some advertisements and other stuff for the waste paper basket.

Am I looking forward to some letter or card nowadays? Do I still feel curiosity or anticipation?

Not really.

Very rarely, I find something „personal“ in my mailbox. When it happens it is always a wonderful surprise usually coming from a dear friend. Another boomer, of course.

Today, almost all communication has shifted to email or PN. And I make considerable use of it.
The days of handwritten letters have gone for me, too.

Everlasting Individuality

Has the internet made contacts more distant, impersonal and clinical?

I don’t think so. It all depends on what you put into your communication. If you can keep your individual, personal „sound“ and content that is special, whatever medium you use.

The two of us have chosen this blog, for instance, and we are very happy about you being part of our new adventure with „Big Paul“ and our exploration of digital nomadism.

And since Paul is running smoothly now, we will soon – depending on the weather – take the next step:
Starting renovation and build-up of the van.

So, another story on the doorstep.

That’s it for now. More to come.
